The Official YouTube S60 App Now Available from the Ovi Store

Just yesterday, we tweeted about how long it had been since new content had been added to the Ovi Store. Seems like the Ovi Store guys heard us as a fresh lot of new items & updates were pushed to the store late yesterday night. Amongst the slew up new apps available at the store now is the official S60 version of the YouTube mobile app. Although the app had been available from the YouTube mobile site for a few countries, the store version seems to be available for even more countries.

3 Months & 10 Million Downloads Later, Where is the Ovi Store at?

The announcement I had been looking forward to the Nokia World for was the Ovi Store download statistics. Though it was not announced on the stage, Kai Oistamo, Nokia’s EVP of Devices let the numbers out in a call with a few North American reporters. So the numbers are finally out, and they are nowhere near what most of the people had expected.

In the 3 months since Ovi Store launched and was available to the public, users have downloaded a little over 10 million pieces of content and applications. This combined with the claims by Nokia that an average user has done 6 downloads from the store, gives us a figure of round about 1.67 million users using the Ovi Store. Considering Nokia’s worldwide presence and that the Store supports over a 100 different devices, the numbers seem pretty disappointing. Another statistic available to use was that the store saw a 50% increase in the number of downloads between July & August.

Take a Free French Lesson with this Podcast from GoSpoken on Ovi Store

As we have already mentioned, Ovi Store includes an “Audio & Video” section with sub categories for Audio, Video & Podcasts. Although the number of item in this section is not large, I found an interesting item under the Podcasts category.

Titled “French I – 1st lesson”, This Podcast by GoSpoken is the Part 1 of the 5 Part Pimsleur Language Course for French language. Part 1 has been provided free of cost for Nokia phone users at the Ovi Store.

New Smartphoneware Apps Available in the Ovi Store

Smartphoneware has been one of the few developers striving to make their applications available from the Ovi Store ever since the store was launched. Today, 6 more of their “Best” applications went live on the store, bringing their tally to 25 applications!

The following softwares were released at the store today, in addition to the ones already available from the store here.

1. Best Taskman

“Running applications and tasks control, ability to substitute built-in system task manager or work along with it, ‘Windows Alt-Tab’ style task switcher, a unique way to access favorite applications (Quickstart), running processes control, and many more advanced functions to explore. Unlike built-in task switcher it tells you what programs exactly are running on your smartphone, where these programs reside, memory they consume and capabilities they use.“

2. Best Jotter

“Best Jotter allows you to write down quick notes, memos, ideas and any piece of information, organize it, and easily find at any time. You can keep your sensitive information as notes as well. Just set up a password in the application and Jotter will encrypt all your data. Additionally it’s possible to export notes to a text file that you can transfer to PC. The format of this file is very simple and you can edit the file in any text editor or Excel, transfer it back and import to Jotter.”

Review : Nimbuzz – The one app to IM them all!

I have been using Nimbuzz for the past few weeks, even before it was released on Ovi Store. I could very well finish the review in just one line, and still do justice to this excellent application. This is the “One app to IM them all”.

Services :

The first feature that strikes you is the number of services supported by Nimbuzz. It supports an impressive number of 15 communities for IM including the major ones like Windows Live, Yahoo, Facebook, Google Talk, AIM, MySpace, ICQ. Along with the communities, It also supports VoIP with over 14 SIP accounts, as well as an option to configure a custom SIP account.

Chat :

Once your accounts are configured, you reach the contact list. The contact list in Nimbuzz is a single list showing your contacts from all the configured services alphabetically. Which means you no longer have you switch between services / apps to check on which service a friend of yours has come online. All your contacts, irrespective of the service, show up in a single list. Perfect.

Nimbuzz, the multi service messenger app, buzzes into Ovi Store

Slowly, but steadily, the application line up of Ovi Store is improving with quality apps releasing in the store.

After Palringo & EQO messenger apps, it is now the turn of Nimbuzz to hit the Ovi Store.

Nimbuzz is a multi service IM & VoIP application supporting all the major IM services from Windows Live, Yahoo!, Google, Facebook, MySpace, ICQ, AIM and many more. Along with IM services, it also supports a host of SIP accounts enabling you to make cheaper VoIP calls.

Ovi Store’s first free themes : Beautiful works of Art by Carrie Chau

One of my biggest gripes with the Ovi Store has been the absolute dearth of free content in the personalisation section, which is but natural, given the cost of getting your content published in the store.

Finally, the store received it first free themes with illustrations by Carrie Chau released under the Wun Ying collection.
